Across the United States tensions have been high in many parts of the country due to President Trump’s stance on immigration from Mexico. Unfortunately, many locations canceled their Cinco de Mayo celebrations like South Philadelphia’s El Carnaval de Puebla. This came as a shock to many since the celebration would have been in its tenth year of displaying the culture through traditional dancers, music, and costumes.

Despite Trump’s vicious tactics and the heavy downpour of the previous night, the Crescent Avenue 12th anniversary Cinco de Mayo celebration still went on. Seeing the celebration firsthand the previous years, it was C-Town’s largest turnout yet. As always there was a live, traditional Mariachi band, dancers, refreshments, food samples, raffle prices, bouncy houses, vendors, awards to employees and their famous bike giveaway.

I spoke briefly to Supermarket Operator Jose Perez regarding Philadelphia’s event being canceled and he thought it was a shame but showed no wavering in keeping this tradition alive for many more years to come. Staff, like Bibi Rivera along with Elsie Perez and Anastacio Rivera, were all smiles when they received awards

This event showed that, although tensions are high, our community is strong in its cultural transitions and the pride that individuals feel is unwavering. They truly represent the embodiment of our famous slogan, Bronx Strong.
